Overview
This advanced course in collective labour law explores the evolving legal landscape governing union-employer relations in South Africa and is tailored for labour lawyers, HR professionals, union leaders, and legal practitioners. Students will examine the legislative and policy foundations of collective labour law, court interpretations, and recent amendments to the Labour Relations Act. Emphasis is placed on analysing the social, economic, and political dimensions of workplace regulation. By the end of the course, participants will be able to interpret legislative provisions, engage critically with legal developments, and apply collective labour law in professional contexts. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    • Relevant legislative requirements as an appreciation of the nature and extent of the social and economic forces that underpin the relationship between unions, employers' organisations, and employers, and the way in which courts, organised business, organised labour, and government respond to these forces
    • Policy decisions underlying the relevant legislative provisions and current debates on the adequacy of the regulatory framework
    • Recent cases, statutory provisions, and controversial issues
