South African Sign Language: Pre-intermediate Module A (September Intake)

Overview

This course builds on foundational SASL skills and extends students' ability to communicate confidently across a broader range of everyday and culturally relevant contexts. Students strengthen their expressive and receptive abilities through storytelling, conversations, and thematic topics such as emotions, relationships, health, finance, and Deaf cultural practices. The course emphasises accurate use of classifiers, spatial grammar, role shift, and non-manual features, enabling clearer narratives, descriptions, and interactive communication. Students also deepen their understanding of Deaf culture and learn to engage respectfully and effectively with Deaf community members. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
