South African Sign Language Beginner: (September Intake)

Overview

This beginner-level course introduces students to South African Sign Language (SASL) and the fundamentals of Deaf culture. Through interactive, practical learning, students develop basic conversational skills, including greetings, personal introductions, fingerspelling, numbers, and everyday vocabulary. The course builds an understanding of SASL grammar, visual-spatial communication, and respectful engagement with Deaf signers. By the end of the course, students will be able to exchange personal information, ask and answer simple questions, describe familiar settings, and participate in short conversations using level-appropriate accuracy and cultural awareness. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
