Overview
This practical short course provides professionals with essential knowledge to ensure accurate and reliable ore sampling in mining operations. Students learn the origins and nature of sampling errors, including bias, and explore mathematical models such as binomial and Poisson distributions to quantify and manage these errors. Key topics include quality control in broken ore sampling, definitions of fundamental sampling errors, and methods for building and interpreting sampling monograms to establish optimal protocols. The course emphasises the distinction between samples, specimens, and measurements, empowering students to make informed decisions based on analytical results. Designed for mining technicians, supervisors, mineral resource evaluators, and quality assurance officers, this course is ideal for those with at least two years of industry experience. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    • MAP was a great introduction to the commercial side of the business for a health professional like myself. I am now able to identify and leverage synergies between my department and others in the organisation. Because of the diversity and calibre of its students, WBS has helped me increase my network and I have recommended MAP to a number of my colleagues. It was an investment worth more than the rand value of the course – and motivated me to do my MBA!
