Overview
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to rock slope stability analysis for cuttings, quarries, and open pit mines. Students explore the mechanics of slope failure in both homogeneous and jointed rock masses, along with the geological, hydrogeological, and geotechnical data required for effective design. The course covers analytical methods for plane, wedge, and circular failure, as well as modern approaches to slope monitoring. Economic and planning considerations for open pits are also examined. The course equips mining and geotechnical professionals with the technical insight and analytical skills needed to evaluate and design safe, stable rock slopes. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
