This course introduces machine learning concepts and techniques relevant to geoscientific and geological modelling, with a strong applied focus. Participants learn how machine learning can be used to analyse complex geological datasets, support modelling decisions, and improve predictive insights across the mining value chain. The course covers key algorithms, data preprocessing, model training, validation, and interpretation through applied tasks and case studies. Emphasis is placed on critically evaluating model performance and communicating results clearly for professional practice. By the end of the course, participants are equipped to apply machine learning responsibly and effectively in data-driven geoscientific modelling contexts. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
Duration
5 Weeks (1 week attendance in person, remainder off-site for assessments, etc.)
Format
Full-day lectures for five days in week 1, followed by assessments
MAP was a great introduction to the commercial side of the business for a health professional like myself. I am now able to identify and leverage synergies between my department and others in the organisation. Because of the diversity and calibre of its students, WBS has helped me increase my network and I have recommended MAP to a number of my colleagues. It was an investment worth more than the rand value of the course – and motivated me to do my MBA!
