Overview
The course equips participants, who aspire to enter the Governance Practitioner level granted by the Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa, with an understanding of the structure of the legal system and legal framework in which entities operate and to provide participants with a general understanding of basic legal concepts relevant to their profession
Duration
Participants attend weekly lectures from 17:30 to 19:30 during the period 21 July - 28 November 2025

Courses delivered virtually, students are required to stable internet connection.

    • Legal rules and other rules (i.e. rules of conduct).
    • The characteristics of legal rules.
    • How legal rules are created.
    • Sources of SA law
    • South African court structure.
    • The impact of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa,1996.
    • Interpretation of statutes.
    • The structure of a statute and a court case (i.e. tax case law, Companies Act.)
    • The Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
    • Classification of the law.
    • Framework of the different branches of the law.
    • The language of law.
    • Legal comparison.
    • Dispute resolution.
    • Forms of dispute resolution.
    • Basic principles of the law of contract.
