Overview
This short course is the second in a series of courses that provide a formal academic programme based on the capacity-needs of community activists and organisations. In addition to the capacity building in relation to their work, a further aim is to ensure participants have prospects of converting the certificate into credits capable of enabling access to further studies in the academy. The focus of this short course is on exploring climate justice issues and the emerging law and policy framework in South Africa through a pedagogy that promotes active learning that can inform (and be informed by) practice. The content areas include understanding the climate crisis and basic concepts; social justice issues linked to climate change (climate justice issues); the emerging law and policy framework regulating the management of climate change and climate justice issues; and finally, legal remedies and other tools for addressing climate justice issues. The law and policy instruments to be explored in particular depth include the National Environmental Management Act and Environmental Impact Assessment system (as it relates to climate change mitigation), the Climate Change Bill, the Just Transition Framework, and the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET-IP). A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    • MAP was a great introduction to the commercial side of the business for a health professional like myself. I am now able to identify and leverage synergies between my department and others in the organisation. Because of the diversity and calibre of its students, WBS has helped me increase my network and I have recommended MAP to a number of my colleagues. It was an investment worth more than the rand value of the course – and motivated me to do my MBA!

    • Doing NMP with WBS has provided me with the basic and highly valuable skills as I prepare myself for a leadership role within my organisation. The programme had practical examples which I could relate to my real situation at work.
