Overview
This course provides an advanced examination of the legal principles governing foreign investment under international law. Students explore the sources, evolution, and structure of the international investment regime, including standards of treatment, expropriation, state accountability, and the role of investment contracts. The course also addresses investor-state dispute settlement and the operation of the ICSID Convention. Through theoretical and practical analysis, students develop the ability to interpret and apply legal rules to real-world investment scenarios and evaluate the effectiveness of international legal responses in regulating cross-border investment activity. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
