- Distinguishing between individual and collective labour law
- Individual labour law and the global context
- Individual labour law rights in their constitutional context
- Sources of labour law (the common law, the constitution, and the legislative framework)
- Key provisions and rights arising from the labour relations and Basic Conditions of Employment
- Employment equity in the employment equity act and the key provisions pertaining to affirmative action and unfair discrimination
- The meaning of a dismissal and the procedural and substantive requirements that need to be satisfied when dismissing an employee for misconduct, incapacity, or operational requirements
- Substantive and procedural fairness in unfair dismissal disputes (misconduct, incapacity, or operational requirements)
- Dismissals on the basis of misconduct, incapacity, and operational requirements
- Unfair labour practices, automatically unfair dismissals, relevant remedies, and the applicable dispute resolution process
- Individual employment rights and obligations arising from the Basic Conditions of Employment Act
- Employment equity, affirmative action and unfair discrimination, and the Skills Development Act
