Overview
The course aims to develop English language skills for foreign language speakers who are starting to learn English. It includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills as well as grammar and vocabulary at a Beginner (A1) level on the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) for languages.

    The course content addresses the following topics:

    • Greetings and introductions
    • Vocabulary: the classroom, numbers 1 to 100, prices, months and seasons, days of the week, rooms, furniture, basic colours, countries and nationalities, occupations and professions, family members
    • Spelling and pronunciation of new vocabulary
    • Introduction to telling time
    • Listening to songs and short conversations
    • Writing an email message, filling in a form
    • The verb 'to be' and 'there is'/'there are'
    • Using wh- words to talk about oneself and ask questions about others
    • Personal and possessive pronouns (except for the possessive -s)
    • The present simple tense in affirmative, negative, and question forms
    • Adverbs of frequency to discuss one's daily routine (e.g. 'always', 'sometimes', 'never')
    • Common irregular verbs such as 'have', 'go' and 'get'
    • Using 'can' and 'can't' for permission and ability
    • Word order in simple questions
    • Parts of speech of new vocabulary
    • Using 'want', 'like' and 'would like'
    • Simple punctuation such as commas, full stops, question marks and capital letters
    • This, that, these, and those
    • Introduction to the past simple and present continuous tenses
    • Identifying basic parts of speech
