Overview
This course introduces students to essential French needed for everyday communication. It focuses on building basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through practical topics such as greetings, personal information, daily routines, food, travel, and directions. Students learn to understand simple spoken French, read basic texts, and produce short written messages. The course also develops foundational grammar and pronunciation, while fostering cultural awareness of French social norms and communication practices. It is ideal for beginners wanting to use French confidently in familiar, everyday situations. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    • Everyday expressions of politeness and social interaction
    • Basic conversations about personal information, routines, and occupations
    • Ordering food and booking accommodation
    • Asking for and giving directions, dates, and times
    • Describing people, places, and daily activities
    • Understanding short spoken dialogues and descriptive texts
    • Reading and interpreting simple written materials (forms, menus, timetables, notes, and adverts)
    • Writing short sentences, messages, and forms using basic grammar and vocabulary
    • Pronunciation practice and awareness of French cultural norms in communication
