Overview
Designed for professionals with experience in mining, this 6-week course offers an in-depth understanding of blasting principles and the application of commercial explosives in various mining environments. Students explore the physics and chemistry of explosives, initiation systems, rock fragmentation mechanisms, and blast design for surface mines, tunnels, and stopes. Emphasis is placed on designing blasts for optimal safety, productivity, and minimal environmental impact. The course also covers evaluation of blast results and techniques for continuous improvement in blasting efficiency. Participants will learn to calculate explosive energy, assess detonation effects, and troubleshoot sub-optimal outcomes. Ideal for civil engineers, mining engineers, explosives technicians, and drill and blast supervisors. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    • MAP was a great introduction to the commercial side of the business for a health professional like myself. I am now able to identify and leverage synergies between my department and others in the organisation. Because of the diversity and calibre of its students, WBS has helped me increase my network and I have recommended MAP to a number of my colleagues. It was an investment worth more than the rand value of the course – and motivated me to do my MBA!
