Overview
This intensive 11-week Business Report Writing short course is designed for professionals looking to master the art of clear, concise, and well-structured executive reporting. Through weekly Saturday classes and a final summative exam, students will gain practical experience in summarising and synthesising complex information, structuring reports logically, using formal and impersonal language, and applying accurate referencing and formatting techniques. The course covers everything from writing effective introductions and findings to representing data visually and applying hedging and certainty language. With a focus on accuracy, grammar, and workplace relevance, this course is ideal for those looking to elevate their business communication skills. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    • Executive report structure and logical sequence
    • Understanding audience, context, and purpose
    • Writing effective introductions: aim, purpose, background, scope, methodology, assumptions, and limitations
    • Writing the findings section: summarising, supporting details, organising information, fact vs opinion, citing and referencing sources
    • Describing and interpreting visual information (charts, tables, graphs)
    • Writing conclusions: applying logical reasoning to summarise findings
    • Writing recommendations using smart criteria and persuasive language
    • Compiling references, appendices, and glossaries
    • Using transition signals to sequence and link ideas clearly
    • Applying hedging and certainty language (modal verbs and conditionals)
    • Expanding vocabulary: paraphrasing, formal register, preposition collocations, passive voice, nominalisations, impersonal tone, acronyms
    • Representing numerical data clearly and accurately
    • Editing and proofreading for clarity, accuracy, and parallelism
    • Formatting reports: consistent use of fonts, headings, bullet points, and layout
