Overview
This course provides legal professionals with a critical understanding of South Africa's environmental law framework. Students engage with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), the Protected Areas Act, and the Biodiversity Act to explore conservation, sustainability, and environmental justice. The programme covers principles of environmental law, impact assessments, remedies and sanctions, administrative law issues, protected areas management, biodiversity planning, and sensitive area regulation. Through research assignments, class presentations, and a summative assessment, participants learn to apply legal frameworks, analyse regulatory mechanisms, and evaluate implementation challenges. Ideal for legal professionals seeking to update or expand their expertise in environmental law. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
