Construction and Engineering Law

Overview

This course introduces students to the foundational principles of South African contract law as applied to the construction, engineering, and energy sectors. Focusing on major standard-form construction and consultancy contracts — including FIDIC, NEC, JBCC, EPC, EPCM, D&B, O&M, DBO, and PROCSA — the course equips students to understand procurement methodologies, assess contractual risk, and interpret key contractual provisions. Students develop the ability to compare contract suites, identify the roles and obligations of contracting parties, and apply sound contract administration practices to support lawful, efficient, and timely project delivery. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
