Overview
This course develops students' confidence and competence in English communication for academic, professional, and everyday contexts. Through guided practice in writing, reading, and speaking, students learn to plan, draft, edit, and present clear and coherent work. The course strengthens grammatical accuracy, builds vocabulary, and enhances paragraph writing across multiple genres. Students also develop reading comprehension skills and improve spoken fluency, coherence, and accuracy, enabling them to communicate more effectively and confidently in personal, study, and workplace environments. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    • The writing process (planning, crafting, drafting, editing, revising, proofreading)
    • Editing and proofreading for sentence structure, paragraph structure, organisation of information, and grammatical accuracy
    • Present, Future, Past, Past Perfect, and Past Perfect Continuous tenses
    • Subject-verb agreement
    • Paragraph types: general, descriptive, example, process, opinion, and narrative paragraph 
    • Punctuation and parts of speech
    • Reading for the main idea, supporting information, detail, and understanding
    • Appropriate vocabulary use 
    • Speaking with fluency, coherence, grammatical range, and accuracy
