Overview
This course explores the intersection of climate change, energy law, and sustainability with a focus on South Africa's policy and international commitments. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the climate change regime, energy regulation, and the governance of fossil fuels, nuclear, gas, and renewable energy. The course critically examines South Africa's heavy reliance on coal, its electricity challenges, and just transition pathways in line with the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. Participants will engage with legal frameworks, policy instruments, and sector-specific regulations while developing analytical skills to evaluate mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable energy solutions. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.
