Overview
This course develops students' ability to communicate clearly, confidently, and professionally in a range of workplace contexts. It focuses on effective business writing and speaking, emphasising audience awareness, tone, purpose, and structure. Students learn to plan, draft, edit, and proofread workplace documents and to produce clear, concise communication suited to business needs. The course also builds confidence in spoken communication through structured tasks such as discussions, meetings, and business pitches. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

    The course content addresses the following topics:



    • The writing process (planning, crafting, drafting, editing, revising, proofreading)
    • Anticipating, analysing, and adapting to audience, context, and purpose of workplace communication
    • The structure of emails, formal letters, memoranda, minutes of meetings, and proposals 
    • Vocabulary development and using appropriate tone and register for audience 
    • Grammar: sentence structure, concord, verb tenses, and parts of speech
    • Editing and proofreading texts for grammatical accuracy and coherence 
    • Speaking tasks within a business context: discussions, business solutions/proposal pitch, meeting
