Overview
The Access to Information and Privacy Law postgraduate certificate course examines the law and jurisprudence dealing with the right to privacy and the right of access to information in public and private hands, with particular emphasis on the relationship between these rights. The course will track important current law reforms and developments.
Duration
This is a semester-long course where participants attend evening lectures from 17:30 to 19:00 once a week during the period 22 July to 28 October 2025
Format
Courses might be delivered through blended learning. Students are required to have basic computer skills and stable internet connection.

    The course content addresses the following topics: 


    • Basic concepts: information society, privacy, information privacy, transparency, freedom of information.
    • Access to information: the constitutional right and the Promotion of Access to Information Act.
    • Introduction to the PAIA and other information legislation. The protection of information privacy in the PAIA.
    • The transparency obligations in terms of the PAIA.
    • Privacy - a philosophical introduction.
    • The common law protection of privacy.
    • Data protection - introduction to the European system.
    • Data protection -Protection of Personal Information Act
